Friday Finds (Aug 30)

FF2_MdFRIDAY FINDS showcases the books you ‘found’ and added to your To Be Read (TBR) list… whether you found them online, or in a bookstore, or in the library — wherever! (they aren’t necessarily books you purchased).

So, come on — share with us your FRIDAY FINDS!

This is a new release this month and it looks like it has a lot of promise.

The Weight of Souls The Weight of Souls by Bryony Pearce

Sixteen year old Taylor Oh is cursed: if she is touched by the ghost of a murder victim then they pass a mark beneath her skin. She has three weeks to find their murderer and pass the mark to them – letting justice take place and sending them into the Darkness. And if she doesn’t make it in time? The Darkness will come for her…

She spends her life trying to avoid ghosts, make it through school where she’s bullied by popular Justin and his cronies, keep her one remaining friend, and persuade her father that this is real and that she’s not going crazy.

But then Justin is murdered and everything gets a whole lot worse. Justin doesn’t know who killed him, so there’s no obvious person for Taylor to go after. The clues she has lead her to the V Club, a vicious secret society at her school where no one is allowed to leave… and where Justin was dared to do the stunt which led to his death.

Can she find out who was responsible for his murder before the Darkness comes for her? Can she put aside her hatred for her former bully to truly help him?

And what happens if she starts to fall for him? (Goodreads Excerpt)

Teaser Tuesday (Aug 27)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My Teaser:

Aiden shifted slightly and his thumb caressed the curve of my cheek. “I’m afraid of something.”

“What?” I whispered.

He drew in a deep, shuddering breath. “I’m afraid of never being allowed to feel what I do.”

Man’s/Women’s best friend? Cats vsDogs?

Why do we refer to dogs as man’s best friend? Is it because they are loyal and loving no matter what? Does the expression refer to men and women or just men? Personally I am a huge fan of Cats. I love cats, all cats, big or small, furry or not. They are far superior to dogs in my experience. Yes they can be a little standoffish at times, but they offer so much love and affection and require little in terms of ‘high maintenance’. I mean I can leave the house for a few days and not have to worry about the cat. (Other than him being pissed when I return and doesn’t mind letting me know it!)

Ten reasons cats are better than dogs :(in my opinion of course.)

1) You don’t walk a cat. (unless you want to drag it!) tumblr.com

2) You don’t have to pick up poop every day. (a sifting litter box is so much easier)

3) Cat noises don’t bother the neighbors.

4) You don’t have to give it a bath.

(They HATE water)

5) Cats can sleep on the bed without taking up all the room. flickr.com (Unless you have a lot of Cats!)

6) Cat’s have personality. Just ask one!

7) Dogs are ‘high maintenance’ needing constant attention. petprojectz.blogspot.com
Cats amuse themselves and are independent.

8) The cat won’t hump your leg. dailykos.com

9) Cats smell nice! Dogs…not so much.

10) Cat’s are very affectionate A purr and a rub and you know you have a friend for life. A dog will lick your face off. (and remember where else that tongue has been! Ewww)

arkinspace.com

So in conclusion then I infer that Cats are Women’s best friend. And we are so much better than men! Lol I am kidding.

So what do you think? Which do you prefer? Are you a cat lover? Or are you a dog lover? Or perhaps you like reptiles? Let me know in a comment. If you have any addition to my list please feel free to add. I love hearing from you.

My Friday Finds this week was discovered while perusing through fellow blogger posts. It sounds interesting and I couldn’t resist.

Discovery (Book One of the Council Powers Trilogy) Discovery(Counsil Powers Trilogy #1) by Lisa White

Grace Mackay thought she was normal, a little shy maybe, but no less normal than any other struggling young waitress. But she did not know about the secretive Powers world. She did not know she was the last person on earth with the DNA needed for the Powers’ survival. And she certainly did not know her newest boyfriend, Gregory, was an Anti-Powers prince who intended to break her heart and her bones in no particular order.

But when she discovers that Ben, her best friend and unrequited former crush, is actually her secret Guardian with superhuman powers, Grace’s normal turns a little wacky. And when she learns that she has The Gift, the rare power to heal the injured and resurrect life with her touch, it is official – Grace is a weirdo even in the Powers world.

But what freaks Grace out more than all that is the fact she has feelings for Ben again – and he has feelings for her – which makes Grace’s new normal a lot more complicated. (Goodreads Excerpt)

Show, Don’t Tell—Using Setting to Deepen Your Characters

Great post by Kristen Lamb, author of RIse of the Machines – Human Authors in a Digital World

Kristen Lamb's Blog

Social media is an amazing tool, and it is a wonderful time to be a writer, but, I am going to point out the pink elephant in the room. We still have to write a darn good book. If we don’t write a darn good book, then no amount of promotion can help us. Sorry. That’s like putting lipstick on a wildebeest.

Not only am I here to help you guys ROCK building an author platform, but I’m also here to train you to be stronger writers…and make you eat your veggies and sit up straight. You, in the back. Did you take your vitamins this morning? Posture! Did you floss? They don’t call me the WANA Mama for nothing, you know ;).

Many times I am asked to expound on the difference between showing and telling. Setting is a great tool to do exactly that.

Today we are going…

The mutant couch has conspired to devour you whole before you get any work done. Never fear there is always hope. One day at a time is my motto and sometimes you need to let the couch win. Take a break, recharge your batteries and start fresh tomorrow.

Six Easy Tips for Self-Editing Your Fiction

Awesome post for writers by Author Kristen Lamb.

Kristen Lamb's Blog

There are a lot of hurdles to writing great fiction, which is why it’s always important to keep reading and writing. We only get better by DOING. Today we’re going to talk about some self-editing tips to help you clean up your book before you hire an editor.

When I worked as an editor, I found it frustrating when I couldn’t even GET to the story because I was too distracted by these all too common oopses.

There are many editors who charge by the hour. If they’re spending their time fixing blunders you could’ve easily repaired yourself? You’re burning cash and time. Yet, correct these problems, and editors can more easily get to the MEAT of your novel. This means you will spend less money and get far higher value.

Are You a “Real” Writer? Is This Even the Correct Question?

Awesome article from author Kristen Lamb

Kristen Lamb's Blog

When we begin this dream of writing, there are a number of hurdles we must pass if we hope to become successful. Some of those obstacles are on the outside, yet many are internal battles. If we waste precious energy fretting over the things we have no way to change? That’s valuable creative energy that can be focused on what’s within the domain of our responsibility.

Schrodinger’s Cat Writer—Who is a “Real Writer”?

I see blogs about this all the time, and I’ve been through this myself. We fall into existential thinking. If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, did it fall? Or, if a writer writes a bazillion words and no one reads them, is the writer a “real writer?” Personally, I am into practicality, not philosophy.

I don’t believe it is a case of “real writer” or “fake/poseur/hobbyist writer.”

My Teaser:

Seth glanced over his shoulder at me as Leon opened the door. Darkness had already started to fall, but the shadow that crept over Seth’s face was no product of the night.

I tried to build up the wall around me.

And I failed.

Deity (Covenant, #3) Deity (covenant #3) by Jennifer Armentrout

I couldn’t resist reading this since I finished the last two instalments of the series. I’m hooked. Here is a link to my review of the first two books:

Do you believe in Magic?

Do you believe in MAGIC? There are all kinds of magic in the world we see it everyday on social media. A woman gives birth to twins that have different fathers or a shop owner has a broom that stands up on its own. Many skeptics however refute the stories as hoaxes or computer manipulation or what not. so my question is:

Do YOU believe in Magic?

I mean real magic, like witches and demons that make potions or spells and can make fire out of thin air, or other creatures that we read about in books like fairies and sprites –

(I love this picture by the way!)

As a writer I think of these questions all the time. Do I believe in magic? Absolutely! Without a doubt I believe this world has many secrets that only a few lucky people have been able to unlock. Magic is what keeps me believing in the good things in this world like love and kindness. (Of course I also have to believe in my spells and potions or they won’t work – belief is what powers the witch in me.)

I also believe in ghosts and have been known to see one or two in my time.

My ghosts actually look more like actual people and not just fuzzy see through shapes.

I also believe that animals have a special sense into things that are magical or supernatural. I think that is why I have an affinity for cats. They truly are magical creatures all on their own.

So back to my original question – Do You believe in Magic? Do you have a story about a ghost you’ve seen or something magical that you witnessed? I would love to hear your stories.
