Musing Mondays (June 3)

MusingMondays5Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week…

• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.
• Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
• Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books — let’s hear it, then!

My Musing:

I’ve commented before that I found a site on Goodreads that participates in Read for Reviews in which authors give their books to people free in exchange for a review on various websites.   Well I have really been enjoying this activity and have been lucky enough to come across some really great finds.  My musing today and my predicament is that I am not sure what to do with a book that I just couldn’t finish.  Either the writing was not edited very well or the story was boring or whatever.  I have no issue with constructive criticism, but I hate telling someone that their book is not up to par.  I was hoping that maybe someone would be able to offer advice.  Should I give the honest review and say it is a 1 or 2 star and say what is wrong with it?  Or should I sugar coat it a little bit?  I don’t think it is fair to the good books to say it was good when it wasn’t.

Then I started thinking about other reviews say from fellow authors that are trying to promote their work.   Hopefully I will get some good comments to help me with my dilemma.

The Second Sign by Elizabeth Arroyo

Product DetailsThe Second Sign by Elizabeth Arroyo published Feb 2013 by Sapphire Star Publishing.  $3.98 CDN Kindle edition.

Bred to believe in the war between angels and demons, Gabby has come to the conclusion that love is responsible for war, jealousy, and all the other deadly sins she can think of. So when she’s exiled to the middle of nowhere for getting kicked out of her fifth school for fighting, she doesn’t expect to meet Jake. Much less fall in love. But Jake is quickly drawn to the eerie beauty of her violet eyes while Gabby is unsettled by their undeniable connection.

When a demon guardian comes to collect her soul, she refuses to give it up. She’s not a demon. She can’t be. Her father and twin brother are angels. The demon gives Gabby twenty-four hours to decide her allegiance, and then starts killing her short list of friends, leaving a message behind: She is the Second Sign.

As Gabby and Jake begin to unravel the mystery behind the Second Sign, she learns Jake may be the key to saving her soul. But it means a sacrifice has to be made that will change their lives forever. (Goodreads Excerpt)

I have to give this a WOW straight up.  I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised that I liked this book as much as I did.  I am not usually into Angels and Demons and that sort of story line, but this book sucked me in almost from the start and I couldn’t put it down.  I was a little concerned with the first chapter being so dark and gory, but after that I really was drawn into the story and loved every minute.  I think I might just read a few more Angels and Demon stories after all.

I really enjoyed the main character Gabby, I found it easy to empathize with her and immediately felt a little sorry for her situation.  I wanted to protect her.  Her character was well rounded and nothing was left out.  The Same is said for Jake.  I equally liked him and wanted the two to find comfort in each other no matter what kept them apart.  I am an eternal optimist and really liked the chemistry between these two. (Even when Jake was being a bit of a jerk, I wanted to slap him and tell him to smarten up cause she is a great girl…lol)

The writing in this book is done exceptionally well and I found it easy to follow.  There were a few instances where I had to reread a passage because of everything that was going on, but it didn’t hinder the story line.  With all the twists and turns in the story it was explained well leaving nothing out.  I was actually surprised with how much detail and thought went into the story as it was very complex.  I love the idea of free will, even for Angels and Demons which one normally associates with good or evil.  I also loved the suspense of the story as we don’t know what exactly Gabby is (although the cover suggests she is an angel of sorts) she is something different and unique.

I really enjoyed this story but there is a dark element to it that may not be for everyone’s taste.

Definitely 5 stars for me.

Teaser Tuesday (May 28)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My Teaser:

I am doing a read for review for this teaser.  Hope you like it!

“Okay, I get it.  Defense mechanism 101, make yourself out to be the freak so no one gets close to you.  Been there, done that,” he said sharply, angrily.  Why should he be angry?  “But I’m going to say hi to you every time I see you.  I’m going to shout at the top of my lungs”- he cupped his lips-“Hello…Gabby!” he yelled, and she pinched her lips and turned pink.

My Musing:

I often go through my list of TBR titles that are desperately waiting for me to devour them.  However, I don’t always have the money to just buy every book I want to read.  Top that off with a couple kids who are always “Mom can I download a book on my Kobo?”.  Seriously do they not understand those downloads cost money?

Well the solution to my problem is that I found a site on Goodreads where new authors post a Read for Review.  Love this idea.  The author gives away so many copies of their book for free in exchange for an honest review posted on Goodreads, Amazon and anywhere else you can think to put one.  I love this!  I think I said that already but OMG I really love this.  I have participated in one so far    To Stand Beside her by Kristin McMichael.  A review is posted.

This is the next one I am participating in.  Stay tuned for the review.
