Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

Truthwitch (The Witchlands #1) by Susan Dennard.  Published Jan 5, 2016 by Tor Teen.  $10.99 CDN Kindle edition.

In a continent on the edge of war, two witches hold its fate in their hands.

Young witches Safiya and Iseult have a habit of finding trouble. After clashing with a powerful Guildmaster and his ruthless Bloodwitch bodyguard, the friends are forced to flee their home.

Safi must avoid capture at all costs as she’s a rare Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lies. Many would kill for her magic, so Safi must keep it hidden – lest she be used in the struggle between empires. And Iseult’s true powers are hidden even from herself.

In a chance encounter at Court, Safi meets Prince Merik and makes him a reluctant ally. However, his help may not slow down the Bloodwitch now hot on the girls’ heels. All Safi and Iseult want is their freedom, but danger lies ahead. With war coming, treaties breaking and a magical contagion sweeping the land, the friends will have to fight emperors and mercenaries alike. For some will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch. (Goodreads excerpt)

What to say?  OMG I love this series!  So refreshingly real and captivating.  I was sucked in right from the start.  It is intense, emotional, dramatic and … real.  It is not your typical book and I will admit that I am a big fan of anything to do with witches and magic so already I knew this was going to be a book for me.  I am extremely glad that I didn’t have to wait for the next book since I only just found this series.  I instantly downloaded the next one and am like gimme gimme gimme more please *sigh.

I am also a huge fan of kick ass heroines who can do it on their own.  This book gives us two!  And before you start thinking that I don’t like romance..lol  I am sucker for that as well.  And this has that too!  OMG my editor is going to lose her mind with all of the exclamation points in this blog…lol  I just can’t help it. I love LOVE love this book and the series.

5 stars for me!  Obviously J

Obsession (Arum) by Jennifer Armentrout

Obsession Obsession (Arum) by Jennifer Armentrout. Published May  31, 2013 by Entangled Teen: Embrace.  Kindle edition CDN $3.99

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something… unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life… or is it Hunter?  (Goodreads Excerpt)

Well what can I say?  I’m a big fan of the Lux series so of course I couldn’t wait to dive into this…I wasn’t disappointed.  I loved the tension and drama between these two characters.  I did want to smack Hunter up the side of his head on a few (ok a lot) of occasions.  He is just so arrogant.  But when you think about who he is in the story…well yeah I would probably be just as arrogant.  top that with Serena who doesn’t take his shit and well she is pretty spunky for a mere human…lol

I don’t want to ruin it so suffice it to say I loved the book!  Loved the characters and it was nice to read a spin off of a good series.  Oh and no you don’t really need to read the Lux series…but why wouldn’t you?

5 stars for me!

The Space Between Us – Movie Review

THE SPACE BETWEEN US

Warning!  Bring a tissue!

This was a fantastic movie!  I am a huge Science Fiction fan and this one did not disappoint.

Synopsis – The movie takes place in the not too distant future.  Earth, as suspected, is depleting its natural resources so we take to looking to the stars to solve the problem.  Technology has evolved so that we can put a space station on Mars and the first 6 astronauts are taking a 4 year posting to settle and see how we can make out on that planet.

The problem arises when the lead astronaut gets pregnant and is not noticed until they are two months into the mission.  She is due shortly after arriving on Mars.  Problem is that since her whole pregnancy has been in a zero G gravity, the baby’s organs are different than normal humans and cannot survive in Earth’s gravity.  His bones are weaker, his heart is larger etc.  The baby (Gardner) remains on Mars after the mom dies giving birth.  The story mostly takes place after Gardner turns 16.

Cast- Britt Roberson plays Tulsa, the 16 year old orphan girl on earth, whom Gardner sparks an online relationship with. Spunky, witty, edgy and charming all rolled into one!  Love the character and the actress who plays her.

Asa Butterfield plays Gardner, the first ever Martian!.  His best friend is a robot and he spends the first 16 years on Mars.  He is cute and funny and a little (ok a lot) nerdy but in a totally endearing lovable way.  You empathise with him immediately.  The actor does an amazing job with this character.

Gary Oldman plays Nathaniel Shepherd the man who founded the project.

Carla Gugino plays astronaut Kendra Wyndham who basically raised Gardner.  Love this actress as well and she does an amazing job.

I was surprised to read that the ratings for this movie were not very good and I’m glad I didn’t know that until after I watched it.  Critics say it’s cheesy and melodramatic.  I get the cheesy comments but I thought it added to the characters.  Maybe I’m more forgiving than most, or just a sucker for a romantic science fiction movie.  Either way….

I don’t want to give away any spoilers but suffice it to say that for me, the movie is amazing.  The science is believable and the story is awesome.  There are some tear jerker moments.  A great combination of romance, drama, suspense and science fiction rolled into one!  Loved it.

5 stars for me!

The Siren by Kiera Cass

siren The Siren by Kiera Cass.  Published by Harper Teen.        $11.99 CDN Kindle edition.

Years ago, Kahlen was rescued from drowning by the Ocean. To repay her debt, she has served as a Siren ever since, using her voice to lure countless strangers to their deaths. Though a single word from Kahlen can kill, she can’t resist spending her days on land, watching ordinary people and longing for the day when she will be able to speak and laugh and live freely among them again.

Kahlen is resigned to finishing her sentence in solitude…until she meets Akinli. Handsome, caring, and kind, Akinli is everything Kahlen ever dreamed of. And though she can’t talk to him, they soon forge a connection neither of them can deny…and Kahlen doesn’t want to.

Falling in love with a human breaks all the Ocean’s rules, and if the Ocean discovers Kahlen’s feelings, she’ll be forced to leave Akinli for good. But for the first time in a lifetime of following the rules, Kahlen is determined to follow her heart.   (Goodreads excerpt)

Well what to say about this book?  I loved it!  Well I loved most of it.

I have really come to enjoy Kiera Cass. I loved The Selection. While this one is totally different, it was still thoroughly enjoyable. I will admit that I’m not too sure how I feel about the ending. I won’t give anything away (I hate spoilers) but I think I wanted more…not that I am sure exactly what more means at this point without telling too much of the story…

I have to say the book was original and full of interesting characters and intrigue. It wasn’t as ‘suspenseful’ or ‘grabbing’ as The Selection, but still very good in its own right. I also liked that this is a book that the author apparently rewrote.  I would love to read the original to see what changes were made.

4 stars for me!

Torn ( A Wicked Trilogy #2) By Jennifer L Armentrout

torn Torn (A Wicked Trilogy #2) by Jennifer L Armentrout.  Published July 19, 2016  by Jennifer L Armentrout.  CDN $4.99 Kindle edition.

Torn between duty and survival, nothing can be the same.

Everything Ivy Morgan thought she knew has been turned on its head. After being betrayed and then nearly killed by the Prince of the Fae, she’s left bruised and devastated—and with an earth-shattering secret that she must keep at all costs. And if the Order finds out her secret, they’ll kill her.

Then there’s Ren Owens, the sexy, tattooed Elite member of the Order who has been sharing Ivy’s bed and claiming her heart. Their chemistry is smoking hot, but Ivy knows that Ren has always valued his duty to the Order above all else—he could never touch her if he knew the truth. That is, if he let her live at all. Yet how can she live with herself if she lies to him?

But as the Fae Prince begins to close in, intent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld, Ivy is running out of options. If she doesn’t figure out who she can trust—and fast—it’s not only her heart that will be torn apart, but civilization itself. (goodreads excerpt)

OMG I am totally loving this series. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book!.  It is really hard to gush all over a book I love without giving anything away, but here goes…

Ivy is still smart ass and tough as nails.  I love the fire between her and Ren…and OMG the secret!  well holy smoke in a landmine!  (not giving anything away 😉 ).  This book vamps up the heat in more ways than one.  It gets really intense with the arrival of the Prince and keeps you on the edge of your seat.  I am sooo stoked for the next book!  Jennifer Armentrout never disappoints!

5 stars for me!
