Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. Published Aug 16, 2007 by Razorbill. CDN $10.99 Kindle Edition

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever. (Goodreads Excerpt)

I have to say that I really like this book.  I’m not a big fan of long series books, but the first book is easily read on its own and doesn’t just end in the middle of a major plot point.  Not that you’re not dying to find out what’s next, but at least it finishes the major conflict at the time. The characters are amazing.  I’m a big fan of Rose.  She is one kick ass heroine and I love how fiercely loyal she is.  Throw in the steamy Dimitri and OMG you’ve got major intrigue, romance and action all in one book.  Did I mention that Dimitri is HOT!

I liked how original this book is too.  How the author builds her world around what we expect from vampires, but throws in a twist.  Not a sparkly kind of vampire twist but an original live and dead vampires twist.  (Don’t want to spoil anything so will leave it at that…lol)

The only weird thing for me is that I couldn’t get over how similar it is to the covenant series by Jennifer Armentrout. I mean it is like both books were following a guideline or something.  I don’t want to go into too much detail but it was eerily similar, which is amazing since this was about vampires and the Covenant series was about Gods, demigods etc. Then I realized that Vampire Academy came out first, so it is not any reflection on this book.  Hopefully the similarities end with the first book only. I really enjoyed the Covenant series however so don’t get me wrong I’m not complaining, it’s just weird.

Back to VA.  I have to say this is now on my top ten list. I can’t wait to get started on the next in the series and now am looking forward to the movie.

5 stars for me for sure!

Don’t Freeze Your Family—Physics PROVES Why We Writers Need to Lighten UP

Many of us are running around like a one-legged man at an @$$-kicking contest. Writers juggle a lot of things at the same time—day jobs, family, laundry, dishes, finances, family, sickness, loss, and THEN there is the actual WRITING. I’ve come to understand that most of us writers live in two opposing states of being:

The State of I SO ROCK Narcissism and The State of I Don’t Deserve to LIVE, What the Hell Was I THINKING?

We write a few pages and think: “OMG, this is AWESOME.”

Next Day: I suck *hangs head*. Where is that brochure for dental hygienist school?

We revise and revise trying to make our work perfect. Whether it’s a book, parenting, or doing bills many of us hold ourselves up to impossible standards. We just about get the house clean and then…the family comes home. Just finish the dishes and…time to start dinner. AHHHHGGGGGG!

Writing—So Easy a Caveman Can Do It

Recently a Facebook friend shared a post with me regarding Indie Musicians versus Indie Authors. It appears our culture has a fascination and reverence for the Indie Musician whereas Indie Authors face an immediate stigma. We authors have to continually prove ourselves, whereas musicians don’t (at least not in the same way). My friend seemed perplexed, but to me it’s very simple.

We’re not even going to address the flood of “bad” books. Many writers rush to publish before they’re ready, don’t secure proper editing, etc. But I feel the issue is deeper and it reflects one of the many challenges authors face and always will.

People give automatic respect to a musician because not everyone can play an instrument or sing. Simple. It’s clear that artist can do something many cannot.

As writers, we have an insidious enemy. People…

Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi

Ignite Me (Shatter Me, #3) Ignite Me (Shatter Me #3) by Tehereh Mafi. Published Feb 4, 2014 by Harper Collins CDN $11.99 Kindle Edition.

Juliette now knows she may be the only one who can stop the Reestablishment. But to take them down, she’ll need the help of the one person she never thought she could trust: Warner. And as they work together, Juliette will discover that everything she thought she knew – about Warner, her abilities, and even Adam – was wrong. (Goodreads Excerpt)

I have to say OMG I loved this book!  This was probably the best ending to a trilogy that I have ever read.  It was as good, if not better than the first one. That is really hard to do I might add.

Everything that I hoped from this book has come to be.  Juliette’s character has so much growth and change in this book.  I love the new badass, kick some butt, take life by the horns amazing character that she is…and of course her powers are amazing.  I have a thing for superpowers that can destroy!  Its the sadist in me I guess…lol.  I had a soft spot for Warner after reading Unravel Me but I was always holding out for Adam.  I have to say this book changed my mind in a big way.  I love how the triangle was finally figured out.  (I won’t say how…don’t want to spoil it.) Mafi does an excellent job with reeling you in as a reader and making you invested in the outcome.   OH and does she ever turn up the HEAT in this book!  Uh huh…

I don’t want to say anything else for fear that I will spoil it.  I hate spoilers.  So I will leave it at this…this is one amazing book and a fantastic end to the trilogy.

5 amazing stars for me.

Do Ghosts have reflections?

I pose this question to any and all.  I have a dilemma in my latest story and I am just not sure how to address it.  The issue surrounds ghosts and their abilities. Do ghosts make a reflection in the mirror?

I have heard stories of people looking in a mirror and seeing a reflection of a ghost or something behind them.  When they turn around the ghost is gone.  Even the ghost at Disney World can be seen in the mirror sitting with you on the Haunted Mansion ride.

What do you think?  Reflection or not?  Help me out please. 🙂

The Devil’s In The Details II–Keep Research from Taking Over

Awesome Article about getting the details right in our stories by Author Kristen Lamb

All right, we’ll do Research Part Duh, um Deux. Last time we talked about how research can take a book to the next level and I also vented about my personal bugaboos when it comes to guns. But here’s the thing, our target audience is likely to have bugaboos as well.

If we write military books, we want military people to like them. But, if we fail to research even basic stuff, we can turn them off. Same with thrillers, historical and even SCI-FI, etc.

Part of the reason for Star Trek’s success was that Roddenberry refused for ST technology to be made up willy-nilly. All technology and “science” had to be based around and grounded in some salient scientific theory….so you can thank Star Trek for automatic doors, cell phones, iPads, and science is still working on hot green women. Apparently there are only so many writers engineers…

The Devil’s in the Details–Taking Your Fiction to Higher Level

There are a few common reasons most of us become writers: 1) We are not normal. Let it go. The Normal Ship sailed long ago while we were bartering for a cheaper price on a t-shirt and souvenir shot glass 2) We hopefully like to read and probably need a 12 Step Program for our book habit 3) We are Masters of “Things Few Know and Fewer Care About” 4) We are  pathological liars born storytellers.

This aside, just because we are born to write doesn’t mean we’re any good, especially in the beginning. I use this analogy. We could see some gal at a club who can really dance. She has great moves. This doesn’t mean she’s automatically qualified to tour with Katy Perry. Training (lots of it) and practice (more of it) and discipline (whoa, crap, even MORE of that) is required to go pro.

Today I…

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit

I have to say that I am a big fan of Tom Clancy and his character creation of Jack Ryan.  My favorite is Clear and Present Danger where Jack is played by Harrison Ford.  Having said that, you don’t have to know the back story or anything else about this movie to enjoy it as a stand alone.

Chris Pine is an excellent Jack Ryan.  I’m a little partial to his acting after Star Trek.  The movie is based on the back story of Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst/operative.  In this version, a young Jack is wounded during a tour in Afghanistan and is recruited by the CIA.  Kevin Costner plays his handler.  (Also a big fan of Costner…just saying.)  Jack uncovers a plot by the Russian government to collapse the US economy.  Jack is tasked with an undercover mission to go to Moscow and investigate.  His plans are interrupted when his suspicious fiancée Cathy (played by Keira Knightly) meets him in Russia and ends up in the thick of the action and blowing Jack’s cover.  If I never saw any other Jack Ryan movie I probably wouldn’t notice anything odd, but this Cathy just doesn’t seem to fit the version in my mind developed by the other movies.  She is too mistrusting, too into the whole covert spy thing and just…too much.  She does a great job misleading the bad guy however so we will forgive the writers for the rest.

While the first half hour or so of the movie drags and is a little boring, it picks up quickly and delivers a non stop action spy thriller worthy of praise. It is sometimes a little cliché, but it delivers as promised. I really enjoyed the movie and look forward to other versions.

4 stars for me.

Why Now is the Best Time to be a Writer

Great article by guest blogger Jessica Baverstock on Kristen Lamb’s blog.

Those of you who follow my blog know that optimism IS my super-power. Yes, The Digital Age can be daunting. We are entering uncharted territories and often we have to learn by trial and error. One of my peeves is when “statistics” compare earnings or “success” of traditional authors with self-published and indie authors.

Traditional has had generations to shape and mold a business model, whereas the new forms of publishing are still in their infancies. But, I promise you those babies are gonna grow up FAST and boy will they have an appetite.

Just to throw my in two cents; one of the LARGEST blessings of social media is we have unprecedented access to experts. Need to know about guns, law enforcement procedures, geography, whatever? SOMEONE is happy to give the answer. I had a writer friend in Europe who wanted to set part of her book in Texas…

8 Tips to Make Sure Everyone on Twitter Hates Us

Awesome post about Twitter from Social media expert Kristen Lamb!

Author Kristen Lamb's avatarKristen Lamb's Blog

As a social media expert, I run into all kinds of strange behavior and tips that make me scratch my head. Social media is social, meaning it’s supposed to be an extension of how we might interact with other human beings in person. Today’s post (obviously) is tongue-and-cheek, but humor can be the best teacher even if we’ve oopsed.

Tip #1—Only Use Automation

Writing a 140 characters is SUPER time-consuming. We aren’t Jack London. Besides, people LOVE talking to robots. I know when I feel lonely, I call AT&T because I know a human being will NEVER answer…EVER. Humans can be so boring and don’t offer us the option of hitting 6 if we want to hear everything they just said all over again.

Real Life Application: Program cell phones to call friends and family at regular intervals to ask for money. They’d dig that.

Tip #2—Make Sure All Preprogrammed…
