Recalled (Death Escort #1) by Cambria Herbert. Published Feb 15, 2013 by the author. CDN $3.15 Kindle edition.
Love or Death? A simple question really. The choice seems obvious. But. What if you never knew love, what if your life was spent just trying to survive? What if you knew your fate before you were fully grown?
And then you died. And you were given another chance. A better chance. This new life depended upon one thing: your job. And so you agreed. You thought it would be simple. You thought it would be cut and dry. It never is. And now you are left holding the fate of someone else in the palm of your hand and you have to make the ultimate choice. Love or Death? (Goodreads Excerpt)
I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. It was a refreshingly original idea and I have yet to read anything like it. It has everything I like in a book, mystery, suspense, romance, magical powers, and supernatural beings. And I love the amazing cover.
I liked Dex from the start. He is edgy and street wise and genuinely has a good heart, even if he doesn’t see it himself. I liked watching him war with the complexity of the decision he has to make. On the surface it seems easy but the reality is far from it.
I liked Piper but she was a little naive and I would have liked to see her powers explored more. (I don’t want to say anymore to avoid spoilers.)
I liked the interaction between the two as well. It was real and genuine and not forced or ‘love at first sight’ or anything like that. Piper feels a pull toward Dex which is explained and Dex takes his time figuring out his feelings given the complication of his mission. (enough said..lol)
all at once, everything looks different, now that I see you gif is courtesy of blogs.disney.com
The only thing I didn’t like about the book was at the beginning of each chapter there was a definition of a word that was identified in the chapter. I found that it was distracting from the story and made me lose focus. Once I decided to ignore it (which wasn’t easy because the brain demands to read everything the eye sees on the page!) I found it flowed more then and I got more involved in the story.
I’m interested to see what the next story is about since this one was complete at the end.
4 stars for me.
Duplicity (Spellbound #2) by Nikki Jefford. Published May 20, 2012 by the author. CDN $3.05 kindle edition.
If Graylee Perez thought sharing a body with her twin sister was bad, dealing with a duplicate of herself is two times worse. Gray the second doesn’t seem to get that Lee’s boyfriend, Raj, is off limits. Then there’s the problem of Adrian. He expects one of the Graylees to be his. Nearly a year later, the council is on to them for past misdeeds; Lee, along with the rest of the coven, has lost control of her powers; and Gray is being stalked by what looks like the Grim Reaper. If the two Grays work together, they may stand a chance of setting things right and making it out alive. (Goodreads Excerpt)
I am totally blown away at how original and amazing this series is. I love Graylee, she is so likeable and funny and really ballsy (is that a word?) how about feisty? That works. So in this book we got rid of Charlene the evil twin and now have two Graylees…talk about a mess. It gets complicated and interesting and I love the passion that Gray (in Charlene’s body) and Lee (in Stacey’s body) share.
I was totally enthralled that Adrian the bad is back and is as evil and sinister as ever…ok maybe not that sinister, he has a soft spot for the girls so he isn’t all bad right? He does get into a lot of mischief and mayhem though making for an interesting character.
I have to say that I am hooked on this series and the author Nikki Jefford as well. I can’t wait to dive into the third book. I think I ‘m obsessed…in a good way J
5 stars for me.

The One (The Selection #3) by Kiera Cass. Published June 5, 2014 by HarperCollins Children’s Books. CDN $13.99 Kindle edition.
THE SELECTION changed the lives of thirty-five girls forever. Now, only one will claim Prince Maxon’s heart… It’s swoon meets the Hunger Games in the final instalment of THE SELECTION trilogy! For the four girls who remain at the palace, the friendships they’ve formed, rivalries they’ve struggled with and dangers they’ve faced have bound them to each other for the rest of their lives. Now, the time has come for one winner to be chosen. America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown – or to Prince Maxon’s heart. But as the competition approaches its end and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realises just how much she stands to lose – and how hard she’ll have to fight for the future she wants. (Goodreads excerpt)
Well what to say about this roller coaster of emotions that calls itself The Selection? I have to admit that I really loved this story. It wasn’t a diehard serious deep in-your-face dystopia. It was fun and romantic and less political than most dystopian books. You swoon over Maxon and love the cat fights and the hilarity of the antics of the contest. You grab onto America and secretly hope that she gets her happily ever after with the prince. You want to smack her a few times for being stupid but…sigh Maxon is there.
And then there is The One (Selection #3). This book makes a dramatic change in tactics and focuses more on the politics and rebels and all of the angst that most dystopian novels have. Not to say it doesn’t deal with the romance…it does, but it is grittier and hard. The roller coaster continues and at one point I was very sad and angry and then….sigh…tear…OMG I love Maxon…I won’t say anymore.
The ending is a bit of a shock but it is satisfying and a great end to the trilogy.
5 stars for me.
Entangled (Spellbound #1) by Nikki Jefford. Published Feb 20, 2012 by the Author. CDN $FREE on kindle.
Two months after dying, seventeen-year-old witch Graylee Perez wakes up in her twin sister Charlene’s body. Until Gray finds a way back inside her own body, she’s stuck being Charlene every twenty-hour hours. Her sister has left precise instructions on how Gray should dress and behave. Looking like a prep isn’t half as bad as hanging out with Charlene’s snotty friends and gropey boyfriend. The “normals” of McKinley High might be quick to write her behavior off as post-traumatic stress, but warlock Raj McKenna is the only person who suspects Gray has returned from the dead. Now Gray has to solve the mystery of her death and resurrection and disentangle herself from Charlene’s body before she disappears for good. (Goodreads Excerpt)
I have one word to say “Freaking Wow”. (Ok that was two words but I couldn’t help it). I totally loved this book. It was original and emotional and a roller coaster of emotions. At the beginning I was like “ok this is good, my kind of book, witches etc.” I didn’t read the excerpt before reading it so when I got to the good stuff I was like “holy crap this is wild.” And then when I got into it I was like “Oh no she didn’t” and “Are you freaking kidding me what a B*#@.”
So any book that gets me that riled up is good in my eyes. I know I haven’t’ said much but hey that’s how these reviews sometimes go. I hate spoilers so in a nutshell:
I loved loved loved the book. So much so, that as soon as I finished I bought the next book. It has everything I love in a YA book, magic, witches, warlocks, intrigue, suspense, twins, romance, plot twists and holy smoke a lot of action. I got sucked in as soon as I started and it didn’t let up. Even at the end. I was emotionally invested from the start.
5 awesome stars for me!
