Predators Abound—How Writers Can Be Savvy in Social Media, Marketing and Promotion

Great post by Kristen Lamb. Author of Rise of the Machines: Human Authors in a digital World

We’ve been talking a lot about the new publishing paradigm and all the options writers have. Being the WANA Mama, I feel it’s my duty to feed you guys the grow-up stuff. So, if you want a fluffy kitten hug? This is the wrong place. There are plenty of people who offer a magic algorithm or promotion package or SEO package “guaranteed” to launch a writer to fame and fortune. Yet, these can be misleading and take our focus away from activities that have a better chance of translating into long-term success.

Hoo-Doo Voo-Doo for Sale

What many of you might not know is I sometimes help small businesses. I recently started doing some work for my brother’s company. Why did I step in? Because he (like many others) paid thousands of dollars for a Mega-PR-Expert…who then did NOTHING.

My brother hired this well-known PR expert to create his social…

CP Matchmaker Starts today!

Hello everybody!
What is CP Matchmaker, you ask?
CP Matchmaker is hosted by Megan Grimit and is Megan’s way of paying it forward.  Megan considers herself to be extremely lucky in landing the most amazing critique group. The ladies she works with are smart, and kind, and thoughtful and they’ve taught her a lot about the way she writes and the kind of writer she wants to be.
But not everyone has this. And that’s something that eats away at her.
Because everyone should have a team. Everyone should know exactly where to go and what to do to find someone who is going to be honest and helpful.
So, she brainstormed the idea “Why isn’t there a Twitter pitch party for finding CP’s?”
AND CP MATCHMAKER WAS BORN!
(Dramatic, no?)
Ok, so here’s what’s up:

What:  A chance to pitch your book to a bunch of like minded writers
Where:  Twitter, of course!
When: January 20th from 10am-10pm EST
Why:  Because it’s going to be so much fun!
But you’re going to need a few things first.
1. A twitter pitch (140 characters or less to include the #CPMatch hashtag)
2. A blog button, should you choose to spread the word and get more people involved. (See below)
3. And a few labels:

For the purpose of easy identification, please include (abbreviated for your convenience) a little about your critiquing style.(Note: These are for how you critique others work, not what you need for your own.)

Do you get straight to the point- STTP
Fan of the compliment sandwich- CS
Are you brutally honest- BH
How about a good copyeditor- GCE
Or are you more of an attention to detail type: ATD
Maybe a critique partner beginner: CPB
Plot hole hunter: PHH
Do you give great big picture notes: BP
Are you a few of these things? Go ahead and list as many as will fit in your pitch.
Need an example of a #CPMatch pitch?
Trapped among bleeding walls, psychotic passengers, and manifested fears,
can Olivia escape with her life? YA #CPMatch CS ATD
And come the 20th, simply search through the feed. If something looks interesting, DM the person and get to know each other a little better. See what you have to offer each other.
And I can’t stress this enough: SWAP A SAMPLE CHAPTER
You’ll never know if you really mesh well unless you see some feedback first hand.
DISCLAIMER: CP Matchmaker is a baby. Not just a baby, a wrinkly, screaming newborn. If there’s something you’re unclear about, email me, and I’ll try to answer your questions. Have a few extra label ideas? Lemme have em! I am totally up for any suggestions here. I want this thing to be helpful to as many people as possible.
And on that note. SPREAD THE WORD. Please. Pretty please, with sugar on top and ice-cream in the middle.
Tweet about it. Blog about it. Tell your neighbor.
She can only help match the people who attend.
So again, please. Help Megan to help other writers find their CP soul mates like She did.  I personally am very excited by this adventure.
If you have any questions hopefully I can help or you can go directly to Megan’s blog http://www.pawsfangsandsmiles.blogspot.com/2014/01/announcing-cp-matchmaker.html and check out the questions others have asked or ask her yourself.

Author Beware—What to Look for in an Indie Publisher

Great post for those interesting in Indie Publishing, or just want more information.

Author Kristen Lamb's avatarKristen Lamb's Blog

On Wednesday, we talked about all the types of publishing paths and how the new paradigm is becoming increasingly flexible and author-friendly. There is no “right path” only a path that is right for you, which we will talk about in a moment.

To keep up with all the changes in The Digital Age, we created WANACon, which is a virtual conference and as close to the real thing one can get without a holo-deck. No travel, no hotel, from home, and all recordings are included so you can fit a writing conference to your schedule no matter where in the world you happen to live. Also you can listen to anything you miss or might need to revisit. Talk to agents, editors and professionals without ever stepping outside.

Over 20 presentations on craft, social media, platform-building, web design, cover design, and agents…delivered straight to YOU. No matter which publishing…

The Tips to Maximize Conflict in Your Novel

Great article by author Kristen Lamb!

Whenever I blog about craft, I’m coming from the perspective of a long-time editor. I do understand that the creation process is vastly different from the editing process. I know this because I’ve been on both sides. But, if you want to minimize revisions and rewrites, it helps to have some basic editorial skills in your toolbox.

Since many of you might want to pursue self-publishing, you’re wise to hire an outside editor. The cleaner the text, the lower the bill. Even if you want an agent or to traditionally publish, the tighter the writing, the better the odds your work will earn positive attention.

Line-edit is important and no longer my area of expertise. I put commas everywhere and pay other editors the move them where they need to be. Typos happen even to the best of us. Right now, I’m editing my almost 100,000 word mystery-thriller and *head…

You Know You’re a Writer When…

Have to check out this post by Author Kristen Lamb.

Author Kristen Lamb's avatarKristen Lamb's Blog

We’ve been talking about some heavy stuff the past several posts, so I figured it was time for a bit of levity. We writers are different *eye twitches* for sure, but the world would be SO boring without us.

You Know You’re a Writer When…

You’ve learned that regular people are cute, and no longer get offended with this conversation.

Regular Person: What do you do?

Writer: I’m a writer.

Regular Person: No, I mean, what’s your real job?

You’ve come to understand that writers are a lot like unicorns. Everyone knows about them, they’ve simply never seen a REAL ONE.

You Know You’re a Writer When…

The NSA, CIA and FBI no longer bother with you. Likely, they know you by name and now outsource to the creepy ice cream truck to just make a few passes and check to make sure you’re still at your computer.

Brave New Bullying: Goodreads Gangs, Amazon Attacks—What Are Writers to Do?

Words to live by. Great Post by Author Kristen Lamb.

Author Kristen Lamb's avatarKristen Lamb's Blog

Today is a tad of a touchy subject, but in this New year, I want everyone to have a the greatest gift any of us can have…peace. Bullies, in my opinion, are among the lowest known existing lifeforms. I wouldn’t want to insult cockroaches and fleas by drawing a comparison.

Kristen’s History With Bullies

I grew up most of my life being bullied. I switched schools at least once a year and there was always a new gaggle of Mean Girls to make my daily life a veritable hell. I think this is why I grew to love books. I skipped school so much (to seek sanctuary at the public library), that I’m fairly certain I’m the reason for the current Texas truancy laws.

I couldn’t get out of bed. I became ill at the thought of even walking through the front doors of my school. I was poor and…

What Ebenezer Scrooge Can Teach Us About Great Writing

Great Post by Author Kristen Lamb. Really get the in and out of good story telling using a popular Christmas tale.

Author Kristen Lamb's avatarKristen Lamb's Blog

Screen Shot 2012-12-24 at 9.22.47 AM

One of my all-time favorite movies for the holidays is The Muppets Christmas Carol. I believe I’ve seen this movie a few hundred times. I’ve worn out three VHS tapes and at least three DVDs. I play the movie over and over, mainly because, well, duh,  MUPPETS! I drive my husband nuts playing this movie over and over…and over. I’m worse than a three-year-old.

But, Muppets aside, also I can’t get enough of the music. Also, I love the story of A Christmas Carol no matter how many times I see it, no matter how many renditions, and I am certainly not alone. Charles Dickens’ story of a redeemed miser is a staple for holiday celebrations around the world and across the generations.

This story is virtually synonymous with “Christmas,” but why is it such a powerful story? Why has it spoken so deeply to so many? Why is…

Do You Have “As You Know, Bob…” Syndrome?–How Writers Can Butcher Dialogue & How to Fix It

Great post as usual by Author Kristen Lamb and guest WANA International Instructor Marcy Kennedy.

Author Kristen Lamb's avatarKristen Lamb's Blog

Writing a stand-out novel involves a lot of individual pieces working together in perfect concert. If there’s no solid plot? Readers get confused, lost or bored. If the plot is great, but the characters are all one-dimensional paper dolls? No one cares. If we butcher grammar, spelling and formatting? It’s a formula for dismal sales or even a long line of one-star reviews from ticked off readers.

Hey, the world may think writing fiction is easy, but we all know differently ;).

One of the best ways to move plot forward with increasing momentum and to create living, breathing characters is by harnessing the power of dialogue. As an editor for twelve years, I can tell you dialogue is one of the single largest components of writing great fiction, and it’s the part that’s most often butchered. The story can be great, the setting, the prose?

….and then comes…

Oliver Chase-New Release Marsh Island

I am very excited to announce that Oliver Chase’s new book, Marsh Island is being released today by AEC Stellar Publishing, Inc.

Oliver F. Chase is a veteran Marine with a career in the FBI, whose mystery/thriller book, MARSH ISLAND (AEC Stellar Publishing Inc., November 22, 2013), is the first installment of The Hirebomber Series.  Price: $13.79

Marsh Island (Hirebomber Crime Series, #1)

After a crushing injury, Army Ranger Phil Pfeifer is left for dead in the mountains of Iran only days before the start of the Gulf War. America cannot reveal such a violation of national sovereignty mere days before Kuwait is invaded. The body may heal but the heart takes longer. Seeking a new life as a private investigator, Phil is hired to find a wayward husband who’s become enraptured with stars and predicting the future. A simple case and the midlife crazies stop when a boat captain is murdered at his feet and the Mafia chases him through the backstreets of Las Vegas. Pleading with Phil to continue, the terminally ill wife sends him into the tropics to face death, sharks, miles of open ocean, and prison.

Here’s what others are saying about it:

SHANNON A. THOMPSON, Award-winning author of the Young Adult Paranormal Romance, Minutes Before Sunset:

“What an absolute thrill. The mystery left me unable to guess what would happen next, and the prose was both delightful and haunting. Oliver F. Chase created a troubling beauty, even in the desert landscape, and the stars were as bright as the storyline. A great read for fans of detective fiction, suspenseful mystery, and thrillers.”

RANDOLPH PLOTTS, Avid reader of thriller books:

“The characters seemed real and knowable, and there was a wide variety of them. The author has a knack for description, not only for people but also for locations and situations! The book was a page-turner. I wanted to read just one more chapter before putting it down.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Oliver F. Chase

Oliver graduated high school and would be able to fly, which was really all he ever wanted. The war was on and the Marines offered a way.  He took it. Some five years later, Oliver was a vet with a Distinguished Flying Cross and a long list of combat missions – even a couple in that dark, secret world of political deniability. Oliver spent five years in a police department working narcotics and SWAT, and the next 22 in the FBI. He and his wife live on a small farm along the Gulf Coast near New Orleans.

Sentinel

Sentinel by Jennifer L. Armentrout Sentinel (Covenant #4) by Jennifer L Armentrout.  Published Oct 31, 2013 by Spencer Hill Press. CDN $6.26 Kindle edition.

It’s a beautiful day for a war.

As the mortal world slowly slips into chaos of the godly kind, Alexandria Andros must overcome a stunning defeat that has left her shaken and in doubt of their ability to end this war once and for all.

And with all the obstacles between Alex and her happily-ever-after with the swoon worthy Aiden St. Delphi, they must now trust a deadly foe as they travel deep into the Underworld to release one of the most dangerous gods of all time.

In the stunning, action-packed climax to the bestselling Covenant series, Alex must face a terrible choice: the destruction of everything and everyone she holds dear… or the end of herself. (Goodreads Excerpt)

What can I say?  I’m sad that it is over, but OMG I loved-loved-loved this series.  There are so many aspects to this book that I am speechless.  It is an emotional roller-coaster that doesn’t let up.  It was well worth the wait.  The whole time reading this book I was like…OMG there is no way I am going to like the ending.  I should not have feared.  Jennifer Armentrout did an amazing job with this series and the ending does not disappoint.  I laughed, I cried, I wanted to scream but in the end…wow that is all I can say without giving anything away.

Alex is without a doubt the best female kick ass heroine I have ever read about.  And Aiden…sigh…. I so love everything about him.  These two are phenomenal characters.  They make the story.  And who would have guessed that Seth…the arrogant asshole with the agenda to boot, would turn out to be such a…wait I can’t tell you, it would give away the story.

It is really hard to do a review on the 5th book without giving the story away so suffice it to say the book…and the whole series…is AWESOME.  There is nothing left out in this book, it delivers everything you could want, Gods, Demi-Gods, Mortal heroes/heroines, Daimons, supernatural powers, love, lust, fighting and bad ass action all the way.  I highly recommend it.

5 stars and then some for me.!
