“And if we lose?” I ask.

“If we lose?” Plutarch looks out at the clouds, and an ironic smile twists his lips.  “Then I would expect next year’s Hunger Games to be quite unforgettable.”

Shade – Jeri Smith-Ready

Shade by Jeri Smith Ready. Published by Simon Pulse  $5.69 CDN Amazon Hardcover.  $10.99 CND Kindle edition

I have to start off by saying ‘Wow’.  I can’t believe how much I loved this book.  The book takes place in a time after ‘the shift’ in which everyone born after this event can literally see ghosts who have unfinished business and remain on earth to fix something.  There are also Shades, ghosts that get so bitter and twisted that they turn bad, thus become dangerous to post shifters.

I loved the originality of the story in that every person born after the shift can see ghosts.  It is pure genius how she creates the post shift world that includes ‘black boxes’ that keep ghosts out of certain places, the color red that repels them, lawyers that sue on their behalf, and the government agency that is created to study and capture them if necessary, recruiting post shifters to help them.  She leaves nothing out.  You can sink your head into the story and it becomes believable.

The main character Aura is 16 and a shifter.  At the beginning of the story you are entangled into the relationship between her and her boyfriend Logan.  At the height of their relationship Logan is suddenly killed leaving Aura devastated.  However, since Aura is a shifter and Logan remains behind as a ghost, their relationship continues, albeit a bit twisted.

Aura has never understood why she and others like her can see ghosts.  Aura always thought it was annoying to have ghosts hounding her but now that Logan is a ghost she will do whatever she can to keep him with her.

I don’t want to give too much of the story away but suffice it to say that this story packs a wallop of a punch.  I couldn’t put it down.  The reader is so intricately woven into the story that I needed to know more and more.  Each new piece of the puzzle left me on the edge wanting to find out more.

The characters were believable and stayed true to form.  You instantly felt sorry for Aura and her predicament, even when a new love interest, Zachary shows up.  The author does an amazing job of staying inside Aura’s head sweeping the reader up in the compelling drama of Aura’s need to do whatever she can to keep Logan.

The only thing that gave me any pause was that the reason for the ‘shift’ was never revealed.  I kept waiting for the explanation; however about half way through I realized that it was part of the intrigue of the story.  The characters don’t have an explanation either, not even the government agency responsible for policing ghosts and shades.

Definitely 5 stars for me.

Ways to Create Multi-Dimensional Characters–Tip #1

Awesome article every writer should read

Kristen Lamb's Blog

To give characters depth, we have to be people-watchers. Study people. Know thyself. I strongly recommend reading books on psychology as part of research. For instance, I read a lot of FBI books on profiling.

As writers, characters need some amount of consistency without being predictable. If there is some deviation from the profile, there must be a good reason WHY, other than we need a character to act a certain way to move our story forward.

For instance, the shy librarian who rescues spiders cannot suddenly gouge out the eyes of a guy mugging her unless we can offer a reasonable explanation for this deviation from archetype. I.e. She could have been raped and left for dead as a teenager. Yes, she remained shy and soft-spoken and true to her character…until circumstances brought out that wounded part who was capable of going for the eyes.

Shade – Jeri Smith-Ready

I am absolutely loving this book!  I am almost finished and will post a review as soon as I can.  But I can tell you this is a gem of a story that I picked up randomly at Walmart about 8 months ago and has been sitting on my shelf ever since.

Transcender: First-Timer

Vicky Savage – Kindle edition published July 2011 -$3.01 CD

Transcender: First-timer is about 17 year old Jaden who, through some accident of fate is thrust into an alternate universe. The premise of the story is that there are an infinite number of alternate realities out there where people make different decisions thus the alternate reality. Jaden finds herself in one of these realities where life on earth is very different from ours. There are basically three domes or colonies that exist since the atmosphere is no longer viable for sustaining life. Jaden is transported into her own body in an alternate reality in which she is a princess of Domerica and is kidnapped by Ryder who is a Chief’s son of a rogue clan (for lack of a better term). Ryder doesn’t live in any of the domes.

This one is a tough one for me to review. It took a long time for me to read it. I’m not sure it was the books fault or that I was reading other books at the same time which I don’t usually do. Anyway, I did enjoy the story. The world building was done exceptionally well and I could visualize it in my mind. Everything was in place. The story idea itself was excellent and at first I couldn’t put the book down. Then somewhere in the middle I got a little bored and would only read a short snippet at a time. I don’t think it was the writing, this was very good, but I think the story just dragged a bit in the middle so I got bored. I tend to like fast passed edge of your seat type books. The ending picked up and again I couldn’t put it down. Absolutely loved the ending including the cliff-hanger, which again is something I don’t usually like. I prefer my stories to be independent of the sequel, but this one was very well done.

The only thing that I didn’t like which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of five is that the main character was a little off. She didn’t speak or act like a 17 year old girl most of the time. She seemed so grown up. This isn’t a bad thing, but I would have expected more teenage angst and drama for someone so young thrust into that situation, (****spoiler alert****) especially when faced with the idea of marriage at that age. I get the whole soul mate thing but what 17 year old from our world would be even thinking about that? Even if she says she is going to wait for a while before actually doing it.

4 stars
