New Year’s Resolution

I know I am a bit late in posting this but I had to put a lot of thought into what I wanted to say. I don’t necessarily believe in New Year’s resolutions.  I prefer to call it…New Year Goals.  Last year 2016, my goal was to get my personal life situated, sell my house, buy a new one, write more, read more…hopefully publish a new book.  As it turns out I was successful in some areas and not in others.  The goal is to continue on the path of self-improvement.  In that way, I was very successful.  I didn’t sell another book, nor did I finish the one I was writing.

However….I am not one to divulge into a vat of despair because I didn’t accomplish something. So….

This years New Year’s Goals for 2017:

  1. Stop spending money I don’t have. (Yes I have a solid plan!)
  2. Finish writing a book. ( I have two started so maybe finish two books!) Yes I am nothing if not ambitious.
  3. Read more ( I will put this on every years goals until I can no longer see!) Although then I will just get audio books….never give up!
  4. Write more in this blog! (sorry its been dismal in 2016 but I vow to do better J )

It is a short list but doable. For the record i also don’t believe in dropping my goal if I fall off the wagon.  So if I use my Credit Card I won’t abandon my goal (especially if it’s to buy more books 😉 I will pick myself up and continue on trying to achieve my goal.

So I wish you all the best in 2017 and all the luck and support in reaching your own New Year’s goal. Feel free to share those goals in the comments section and/or a link to your own post.

“I can alter,” he clarifies. “Same materials, different results. Spinsters can create, while Tailors can only alter what’s already present. I’m a tailor.”

Pete thinks, This shit don’t mean shit.

He looks at the door, calculates his chances of slipping through it without being noticed, and settles back into his seat. A week from now, all this will be over, he tells himself.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

A Monster Calls A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness.  Published August 27th 2013 by Candlewick Press (first published May 5th 2011) CDN $9.18 Kindle edition

At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting– he’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It’s ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd– whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself– Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined. (Goodreads excerpt)

Ok first off let me tell you that this is not the kind of thing I normally read.  My daughter gave this to me to read.  We don’t have the same taste in most books but so far the ones she tells me to read, I really enjoy.  I think I have mentioned that before…(The Program, The fault in our Stars etc)

It was very different.  I found it a little slow at first but |I still couldn’t put it down.  The monster has three stories to tell Conor and when he’s done he wants a story in return.  I was intrigued and the stories are twisted in a way that you want to keep reading.  I have to say I enjoyed it a lot.  It is easy to read and makes you think.  You get to know Conor with each page and you feel empathy for him and his situation.  I was angry and sad and wanted at one point to smack his father up the side of the head.  I will say I guessed the ending but it didn’t take away from the story.  It was emotional and heart wrenching in a good way.

5 stars for me.

Happy New Year 2016!

I have been racking my brain trying to think of New Year Resolutions that are realistic and meaningful to me. So here it is. My 2016 goals ( I prefer goals to resolutions makes it feel more attainable!)

Finish my current book (working title Rayna’s Way)

Publish Souls of the Chimera (either traditional or self publish)

Make peace with my personal demons

Get my financial situation in order (2015 was a rough year)

I think these are all manageable with patience, time and commitment!

Hope 2016 is good for all of you. Please feel free to share your goals for this year 😊 please leave a comment or a link back to your site. Happy New year to you and Yours.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas to you and Yours.  I hope you enjoy your holidays with family and friends.

Crewel (Crewel World #1) by Gennifer Albin

Crewel (Crewel World, #1) Crewel by Gennifer Albin.  Published October 16th 2012 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR).  CDN $10.99 kindle edition. (although I bought the hardcover at chapters for $6.99!)

Incapable. Awkward. Artless.
That’s what the other girls whisper behind her back. But sixteen-year-old Adelice Lewys has a secret: She wants to fail.

Gifted with the ability to weave time with matter, she’s exactly what the Guild is looking for, and in the world of Arras, being chosen to work the looms is everything a girl could want. It means privilege, eternal beauty, and being something other than a secretary. It also means the power to manipulate the very fabric of reality. But if controlling what people eat, where they live, and how many children they have is the price of having it all, Adelice isn’t interested.

Not that her feelings matter, because she slipped and used her hidden talent for a moment. Now she has one hour to eat her mom’s overcooked pot roast. One hour to listen to her sister’s academy gossip and laugh at her dad’s jokes. One hour to pretend everything’s okay. And one hour to escape.

Because tonight, they’ll come for her. (Goodreads excerpt)

Loved loved loved this book. I seem to have a thing for dystopian novels lately and I actually found this hardcover book at chapters for $6.99 cant believe my luck. It was incredibly inventive and creative. wickedly entertaining with engaging characters and lots of intrigue, drama, suspense and action….throw in a little love triangle of sorts and it is amazing!

I’m always worried about spoilers so I will be brief. The world created by Gennifer is amazing. I mean being able to manipulate the very fabric of time and space in the world is pure genius. The way she describes it feels like you are there with her. I loved the back story about how her parents tried to protect her and the twisted way society views everything. It has a moralistic feel to it without being preachy.

It ends on quite the cliffhanger and I’m not sure I will feel the same way with the next book since they change the premise of the story. I don’t want to give it away so I will leave it at that.

Creative, imaginative and thoroughly entertaining. 5 stars for me!

Sacrifice (Elemental #5) by Brigid Kemmerer

Sacrifice Sacrifice (Elemental #5) by Brigid Kemmerer. Published September 30, 2014 by Kensington Teen. CDN $7.17 Kindle edition

Earth. Fire. Air. Water. One misstep and they lose it all. For the last time. Michael Merrick understands pressure. He’s the only parent his three brothers have had for years. His power to control Earth could kill someone if he miscalculates. Now an Elemental Guide has it in for his family, and he’s all that stands in the way. His girlfriend, Hannah, understands pressure too. She’s got a child of her own, and a job as a firefighter that could put her life in danger at any moment. But there are people who have had enough of Michael’s defiance, his family’s ‘bad luck’. Before he knows it, Michael’s enemies have turned into the Merricks’ enemies, and they’re armed for war. They’re not interested in surrender. But Michael isn’t the white flag type anyway. Everything is set for the final showdown. Four elements, one family. Will they hold together, or be torn apart? (Goodreads excerpt)

Wow, the final instalment of the Elemental series. I have to say that I am sad that it is over but this final book was worth the wait. I really enjoyed reading Michael’s story. It is interesting the way the author teased us with Michael when she started the series with the novella Elemental. It is fitting that she wrapped it up with his whole story.

I think my only criticism was that the romantic element with Hanna was a bit of a letdown. I get that the story was way more involved to sensationalize the romance, but I liked the connection that Michael and Hanna shared and I kind of hoped that she would be the one to help him be stronger. Her character seemed a bit self absorbed and not worthy of Michael for me. The book focused more on the relationships between the brothers, which was equally as compelling for me given that I come from a large family. The family dynamic is very fun to watch play out in this book and the whole series for that matter.

And holy cow the drama/action/suspense and everything that makes this series fantastic was certainly evident in this final installment. It is nonstop from cover to cover and never a dull moment.
5 stars for me!

Picking up the slack!

Hello all,

I have to apologize for my lack of posting on my blog for the past while.  I have been dealing with some personal stuff and unfortunately that left little time for some of the things I enjoy doing like my writing and this blog.

I am hopefully getting my life a little more organized and plan to put more focus back so my posts should start to pick up and be a little more consistent.

Thank you to everyone for thier patience and understanding.

Cynthia

Ps got a new kitty and had to share!
