Musing Mondays (June 10)

MusingMondays5Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week…

• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.
• Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
• Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books — let’s hear it, then!

My Musing:

My Musing this week is about the Series or the Standalone…which do you prefer?

I think I prefer the standalone book.  I hate waiting all that time for the next book to find out what happens in the story.  Having said that I think my favorite is a series that each book is independent of each other.  For example: The Elemental Series by Brigid Kemmerer:

Each story is an independent story on its own, but still relates to the overall story as a whole.  This way you still anticipate the next book, but your not left waiting for what happens next.

Note:  Brigid also wrote short novella’s in between each of the stories each about 50-60 pages long to keep us until the next full length book:

What is your favorite Stand alone book or Series?

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your musing in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

  1. Great post! I’m so torn about series vs. standalone novels. I mean, I hate waiting for books to release and I also hate the formula where at the last minute something happens that makes you NEED the next book. But I like spending more time with characters, so I like that aspect of series. I suppose I’m like you, a fan of series that are separate from one another, so that each ending is satisfying in its own way.

    • I tried commenting on your post but my firewall wont’ let me. I love my kindle but am guilty of out of site out of mind as well. I keep my books on the cover page for easier viewing. I love hard cover books the best but you can’t beat the price of an ebook. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I enjoy some series books more than others, obviously, and I think that happens when there is an ongoing character, but the storylines are different. Like the book I wrote about today in MY MUSING MONDAY POST

  3. I enjoy a good series, but I think they have a limit, something authors do not seem to see very often, just dragging them on too long.

  4. Yeah, I kind of like the standalone books also 🙂

  5. I agree with you about hating to wait for the next book in a series, but most of my favorite books are series. I like a lot of world building and sometimes that just takes the length of a series! Until I started blogging, I was mostly reading finished series and thus avoiding the problem, but I’ve gotten sucked into some the exciting new ones and am doing the waiting thing now 🙂

  6. i prefer standalones but for some reason i’m always drawn into the a series… sometimes i don’t realize a book i’m reading is part of a series until i finish it and i don’t have a choice but to read the next book

  7. I am so torn about whether I like the standalone or the series better! I think I agree with you – a series that follows the same arc but doesn’t leave you hanging 🙂

  8. Definitely prefer standalones. Last half of ’12 I started 5 series and only got past book 1 in one of them ( I finished the series). Here’s what I’m reading https://daystarz.wordpress.com/2013/06/11/musing-mondays-what-im-reading/
